First Time Deep Sea Fishing in Palm Beach: What to Expect

Never done this before? You are in good hands. Here is how the day goes.

You do not need any experience. The captain and mate rig the lines, bait the hooks and coach you through every bite. Here is what a first-time trip looks like.

  • Experience needed None
  • Gear Provided: rods, reels, bait, tackle
  • Start Usually early morning
  • Bring Sun protection, snacks, drinks, a light jacket
  • Best for beginners Mahi, snapper and bottom fishing

Before the trip

Request your date through our booking page. We confirm availability, weather and timing before anything is final, and send meeting details. Pack using our packing list and take seasickness medicine in advance if you tend to get queasy (see seasickness tips).

The day, step by step

  1. Meet at the dock. Arrive a little early. The crew will welcome you, show you around and cover safety.
  2. Run out. The boat heads through the inlet and out to the fishing grounds. Because the Gulf Stream is close, the ride is often short. Enjoy the view.
  3. Lines go out. The mate sets baits and lures. You can watch, ask questions and relax.
  4. Fish on! When a rod bends, the crew will hand it to you, set the drag and tell you when to reel and when to rest.
  5. Land the fish. The mate gaffs or nets it. You get a photo.
  6. Keep or release. Fish that are legal and good to eat go on ice. Others are released.
  7. Head home. Most boats are back at the dock with the fish ready to clean.

How fishing works offshore

  • Trolling: baits and lures pulled behind a moving boat for mahi, wahoo, tuna, kingfish and sailfish.
  • Bottom fishing: the boat stops over structure and you drop baits down for snapper and triggerfish.
  • Kite fishing: a winter specialty for sailfish. See sailfish fishing.

Tips for a great first trip

  • Listen to the mate. They do this every day.
  • Keep the rod tip up and reel steadily, not frantically.
  • Stay hydrated and put on sunscreen early.
  • Hold on to the boat when it moves, and keep one hand for yourself.
  • It is OK to hand the rod off if you are tired.
  • Be patient. Fishing has waiting and then sudden excitement.

What if I get seasick?

Many people do not. If you are worried, see our guide to seasickness. If you feel it coming, tell the crew, and look at the horizon.
