Fishing With Kids on a Palm Beach Charter

Tips for a trip the whole family will remember (for the right reasons).

A fishing charter can be one of the best days a family ever has. A little planning, the right trip length and the right fish make the difference.

  • Best fish for kids Snapper, bottom fish and mahi
  • Trip length Shorter is better for little ones
  • Pack Hats, sunscreen, snacks, a change of clothes
  • Safety Life jackets, sun, shade and water

What age is right?

There is no single answer. Many families bring children from around five or six and up. Younger kids can come too, but the trip needs to be short, the weather calm and an adult needs to watch them at all times. Talk to us when you book so we can plan for your group.

Pick the right trip

  • Shorter trips: a half-day trip is usually plenty for young children.
  • Calm days: we can help pick a day with gentle seas. See weather and seas.
  • Steady action: bottom fishing and snapper keep kids busy. See snapper fishing and bottom fishing.
  • A fun cruise: if fishing is not for everyone, ask about a fun cruise charter.

Safety first

  • Life jackets in the right sizes are important. Ask us about what is on board for kids.
  • Keep hands clear of hooks, teeth and fish spines. Let the crew handle the fish.
  • Sun protection: hats, sunscreen and light long sleeves. The glare off the water is strong.
  • Water: plenty to drink.
  • Hold on to something whenever the boat is moving.

What to pack

Use our packing list and add snacks, a change of clothes, a small towel, a hat that stays on and seasickness medicine if needed (check the label for children's doses).

Make it fun

  • Let kids reel in a fish with help from the mate.
  • Take photos before the fish go back or on the ice.
  • Bring a small notebook to draw what you catch.
  • Eat your catch: kids love a dinner they caught themselves. See cooking your catch.

Birthdays and family reunions are some of our favorite trips. See private charters for groups.
