The weather is the biggest factor on any fishing trip. Here is how it plays out in Palm Beach through the year, and how we decide when to go.
- Winter Cold fronts bring north wind and rough seas for a day or two
- Summer Calm mornings, afternoon thunderstorms
- Hurricane season June 1 to November 30
- Our rule Safety first: we watch the forecast and talk it through with you
Wind and seas
Wind direction matters more than wind speed alone. A north wind against the north-flowing Gulf Stream makes seas steep and uncomfortable. A west or southwest wind typically flattens the sea near shore. Light winds from the east and south can also be good. See the Gulf Stream guide.
Winter: cold fronts
From late fall through winter, cold fronts push through every week or so. Before a front the wind is often from the south and west; after it passes, strong north wind can blow for a day or two. Calm, clear days between fronts are often the best of the year. That is when sailfish, kingfish and wahoo fishing can be excellent. See sailfish and wahoo.
Summer: calm mornings, afternoon storms
Summer brings light winds and flat mornings, with thunderstorms likely in the afternoon. Morning trips are the best plan, and we keep an eye on the radar.
Hurricane season
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the peak usually from late summer into fall. Most days are fine, but we follow the forecast closely and will not go out in unsafe conditions.
How we decide
- We check marine forecasts, wind, wave height and period, and radar.
- The captain makes the final call on safety.
- We talk to you before the trip, and move the date when it makes sense.
How you can help
- Be flexible with your date when you can.
- Take seasickness medicine early if you are prone. See seasickness tips.
- Dress for the conditions. See what to bring.
