Palm Beach County Inlets and Marinas: A Fishing Guide

Where the boats leave from, and how the inlets shape the fishing.

Palm Beach County has several inlets that connect the Intracoastal Waterway and Lake Worth Lagoon to the ocean. Knowing how they work helps you understand how and where we fish.

  • Inlets Palm Beach (Lake Worth) Inlet, Boynton Inlet, Jupiter Inlet, Boca Raton Inlet and others
  • Lagoon Lake Worth Lagoon: sheltered, inshore fishing and cruising
  • Run to blue water Short, because the Gulf Stream is close
  • Your meeting point Sent with your booking confirmation

The inlets

An inlet is a channel that connects the sheltered waterway behind the beach to the ocean. Boats use them to get offshore, and fish and bait use them to travel in and out with the tides.

  • Palm Beach Inlet (also known as Lake Worth Inlet): the main inlet for the Palm Beach and Riviera Beach area, near Peanut Island and Singer Island.
  • Boynton Inlet: south of Palm Beach, connecting to the Intracoastal at Boynton Beach.
  • Jupiter Inlet: at the north end of the county, with strong tidal flow and a long fishing tradition.
  • Boca Raton and other southern inlets: serve the southern part of the county.

Lake Worth Lagoon

Lake Worth Lagoon is a long, sheltered body of water between the barrier island and the mainland. It is popular for inshore fishing, cruising and watching wildlife such as manatees and dolphins. See fun cruise charters.

Marinas and docks

Charter boats leave from marinas and docks around the lagoon and inlets. We send exact meeting directions and parking details with your booking confirmation, so you do not have to guess.

How inlets affect the fishing

  • Tides: inlet currents run strongest on the outgoing and incoming tide. A strong outgoing tide against an onshore wind can make the inlet rough, so captains time the run.
  • Short run: with the Gulf Stream so close, you can be offshore soon after leaving the inlet. See the Gulf Stream guide.
  • Inshore fish: snook, snapper, jacks and tarpon live in and around inlets and bridges. See offshore, nearshore and inshore.

This is general local information. Your captain knows the day's conditions and will choose the right route.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main inlet in Palm Beach?

The Palm Beach Inlet, also called the Lake Worth Inlet, is the main inlet for the Palm Beach and Riviera Beach area.

Where do charters leave from?

From marinas and docks around the lagoon and inlets. We send your exact meeting location with your confirmation.

How long does it take to reach deep water?

Not long. The Gulf Stream is close, so a short run from the inlet often puts you on blue water.

Can you fish inside the inlets?

Yes. Inshore fishing in Lake Worth Lagoon and around the inlets targets fish such as snapper, jacks and snook.
