Fishing rules protect the fish you want to catch next year. Here is how they work, and where to check what is current.
- Rules cover Size, bag limits, seasons, gear and protected species
- They change Always check current regulations
- Best source The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC)
- On a charter The captain and mate follow the rules for you
The main types of rules
- Size limits: minimum (and sometimes maximum) lengths for fish you may keep. Undersized fish must be released.
- Bag limits: the most of a species you can keep per person (or per boat) per day.
- Seasons: some species are closed for part of the year to protect spawning fish.
- Gear rules: some fisheries require specific hooks or release tools.
- Protected species: some fish cannot be kept at all, such as goliath grouper.
State and federal waters
Florida regulates fishing in state waters, and federal rules apply farther offshore. For many species the rules differ between Atlantic and Gulf waters and between state and federal waters, so it matters where you are fishing.
Catch and release
Some fish, like sailfish, are almost always released. Good release practice means a quick, careful photo, wet hands, supporting the fish and getting it back in the water quickly. See sailfish fishing.
On a charter
Your captain and mate know the current rules and measure the fish. You do not have to memorize anything. If you want to keep fish to eat, tell us so we can plan. See cooking your catch. If you are fishing on your own, check the rules before you go.
Where to check
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) publishes up-to-date saltwater regulations and a mobile app. Rules change, so treat this page as an introduction, not the final word.
This page is general information, not legal advice. Always check the current regulations for the species and area you are fishing.
